busy_fists: (A call from dad)

[Phone]

Well, you heard that little girl on the phone yesterday!  Let's get decorating!  Maybe we can make it into a kind of neighborhood competition - the best decorated house on each street wins a prize.  What do you say?

[Action; 311 Miller Street]

[Well, Thanksgiving and the nuclear wasteland that apparently comes with it in Mayfield is over.  And like any good red-blooded American citizen could reasonably expect to be on the weekend immediately following, Dad is standing at the top of a ladder in front of 311 Miller Street wrestling with a string of hopelessly tangled Christmas lights.  He seems to be managing well enough, but there's always the odd knot to untie or a missing bulb somewhere on the line.]

How's it look?

[Yeah, he's talking to you, random passerby.]

[Action; Achewood Bakery]

[According to a phone call he got right after he finished hanging up the Christmas lights, Dad evidently has a job working as a baker.  News to him, but he chalks it up to another of the town's strange idiosyncrasies, kisses his wife goodbye, and heads downtown to his new place of employment.]

'Morning, everyone!  Looks like I'm going to be working here starting today.  Anything I should know before I get started?

[Once he gets down to business, Dad is actually a pretty skilled baker.  One would think he spends a sizable amount of his spare time doing this sort of thing, and one would be right.  However, on his first day he's spending almost the entire day churning out nothing but cream pies of various sorts.  At the end of the day, coworkers may notice him walk over to the leftover pies that didn't sell (of which there are easily dozens) and pull out his wallet.  Seconds later, the entire stack of pies is gone.]

[Action; Mayfield General Store]

[After work, Dad heads over to the general store to pick up some vital dad supplies.  In particular, he seems to be buying ludicrously large amounts of Barbasol brand shaving cream and pipe tobacco.  By the time he's done, he's got several carts loaded up with bulk crates of the stuff.  It's probably going to take him a couple of trips to bring it all to the front to pay, but at least loading it into the car won't be much of a problem.]

Hello, I am wondering if I can place order?

[The older man smoking a cigarette and looking around at the baked goods finally stopped to ask an employee.]

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Czernobog, right? Of course - what can I do you for, friend?

[Dad leans over the counter all friendly-like. He's kind of getting into this job.]

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, familiar voice. Good to match to face.

[That draws a smile.]

I wish to order sugar cookies made to look like sun.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the sun, huh? So... just plain round ones? Do you want any kind of yellow frosting or something on them?

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yellow frosting will be good. Round like sun.

I am not so good at baking so I do not expect much more.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
All right. I'll have 'em for you by tomorrow. Is that okay?

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly no, I need them by certain date and don't want them stale.

Also, I make little money so I will save up.

Can I order them for the 20th of December?

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
The 20th...

[Taking a moment to write himself a note.]

All right, that shouldn't be a problem. You can pick them up here anytime after noon on the 20th.

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I am appreciative.

How do you like job here?

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Can't complain so far. I feel pretty at home baking, honestly.

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It is good skill to have.

I used to live with women, terrible cooks. Still, they cook so you do not tell them it's bad.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Words to live by, my friend.

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-09 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Same theory goes with all things women do. Doesn't matter how good or bad.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-10 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the same way for anyone, really. You should always appreciate someone putting in effort for you.

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, at least they try. And thought sometimes counts more than result.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
And practice makes perfect, no matter how bad you are at something at first.

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
For some.

Some old dogs do not take to new tricks so well.

Woman I live with, she cooks for many years. Never gets better. Still, she cooks.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, points for trying, I suppose.

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, cheaper than ordering out on fixed pension.

Cigarettes are not cheap in my time and other vices keep bank accounts low.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, every man's got a guilty pleasure or two.

[Although Dad's tend to be for things like cream pies and clown dolls.]

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It is what makes us who we are.

Well, I better get going now. It was good chatting.

We should grab that drink sometime, even if town's selection is only slightly above piss.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure thing. Name a time and a place, and I'll be there. Take care, Czernobog.
