busy_fists: (A call from dad)

2nd Hat

Well, you heard that little girl on the phone yesterday!  Let's get decorating!  Maybe we can make it into a kind of neighborhood competition - the best decorated house on each street wins a prize.  What do you say?

[Action; 311 Miller Street]

[Well, Thanksgiving and the nuclear wasteland that apparently comes with it in Mayfield is over.  And like any good red-blooded American citizen could reasonably expect to be on the weekend immediately following, Dad is standing at the top of a ladder in front of 311 Miller Street wrestling with a string of hopelessly tangled Christmas lights.  He seems to be managing well enough, but there's always the odd knot to untie or a missing bulb somewhere on the line.]

How's it look?

[Yeah, he's talking to you, random passerby.]

[Action; Achewood Bakery]

[According to a phone call he got right after he finished hanging up the Christmas lights, Dad evidently has a job working as a baker.  News to him, but he chalks it up to another of the town's strange idiosyncrasies, kisses his wife goodbye, and heads downtown to his new place of employment.]

'Morning, everyone!  Looks like I'm going to be working here starting today.  Anything I should know before I get started?

[Once he gets down to business, Dad is actually a pretty skilled baker.  One would think he spends a sizable amount of his spare time doing this sort of thing, and one would be right.  However, on his first day he's spending almost the entire day churning out nothing but cream pies of various sorts.  At the end of the day, coworkers may notice him walk over to the leftover pies that didn't sell (of which there are easily dozens) and pull out his wallet.  Seconds later, the entire stack of pies is gone.]

[Action; Mayfield General Store]

[After work, Dad heads over to the general store to pick up some vital dad supplies.  In particular, he seems to be buying ludicrously large amounts of Barbasol brand shaving cream and pipe tobacco.  By the time he's done, he's got several carts loaded up with bulk crates of the stuff.  It's probably going to take him a couple of trips to bring it all to the front to pay, but at least loading it into the car won't be much of a problem.]

[The wife is down on the lawn, sipping from her ever present Martini glass thoughtfully.]

Do you think you could get it a little higher? And perhaps a bit to the left?

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)

Like this?

[He holds the lights up a little higher.]

[identity profile] pinkscarflady.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's it. Now move the green ones just a smidge to the right.

[And she'll just stand on the lawn drinking. So helpful...]

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The green ones...

[Dad rights himself on the ladder after hanging that part of the chain, peering at it for a few moments before locating a few green bulbs in a row.]

...all right. How's this?

[Stretching the cord a bit to move them over.]

[identity profile] pinkscarflady.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's it. Much better.

[Sip of Martini.]

It's really a shame they haven't invented inflatable Santa snowglobes yet. The yard could really use one.

[She..... may be joking.]

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if I could rig something up...

[identity profile] pinkscarflady.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
We'd be the only house in town that has one.

Think of how jealous the neighbors will be!

General Store

[identity profile] infinitemars.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Kira's probably only buying a few things, since the family more or less all cooks, so her cart looks nothing like Dad's. In fact, Dad's cart looks nothing normal, and when she sees it, she can't help but pause, before hiding a smile.]

Um, excuse me, why do you have so much shaving cream?

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Dad smirks a little.]

I like to be prepared.

[identity profile] infinitemars.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
For what? That looks like what my husband and his best friend would get for plotting pranks... Otherwise, it's mostly useless, isn't it? That much, I mean.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, good eye! Shaving cream makes a nice whipped cream substitute in a pinch if you need to throw a good pie.

[Dad rubs his chin a bit.]

Not that I don't need it for shaving too, of course. I like to keep a lot on hand. You never know when you'll be caught away from home.

[identity profile] infinitemars.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Kira's torn between laughing and sighing. This guy looks a bit too old for this kind of prank, but then again, her own husband still gets into moments where he does odd things, so she finally settles for a shake of the head and a small smile. Her words, when she speaks, are joking.]

Your kids must love you.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah, my son's a real chip off the old block! He might even be good enough to out-prank his old man by now.

[identity profile] infinitemars.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Okay, that does earn him a small giggle. She can't help it, considering she can see it somehow. In fact, Kira's still laughing a bit as she speaks.]

So you two take turns pranking each other?

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Something like that. It's kind of a family tradition, you might say.

Excuse me, may I purchase a chocolate cake?

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Chocolate cake? You got it. Just a minute.

[Dad disappears behind the huge pile of cream pies that is, by this point, easily obscuring anything else they happen to have. Chocolate cake is a bakery mainstay, though, so he does bring one around in a few moments.]

There you go. Uh, that'll be...

[Pausing to look at the price, lol 1950s.]

...four dollars.

[Yeah, that sounds about right, by the mun's incredibly rough estimates.]

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, I am wondering if I can place order?

[The older man smoking a cigarette and looking around at the baked goods finally stopped to ask an employee.]

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-11-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Czernobog, right? Of course - what can I do you for, friend?

[Dad leans over the counter all friendly-like. He's kind of getting into this job.]

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, familiar voice. Good to match to face.

[That draws a smile.]

I wish to order sugar cookies made to look like sun.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-01 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the sun, huh? So... just plain round ones? Do you want any kind of yellow frosting or something on them?

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-02 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yellow frosting will be good. Round like sun.

I am not so good at baking so I do not expect much more.

[identity profile] busy-fists.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
All right. I'll have 'em for you by tomorrow. Is that okay?

[identity profile] change-seasons.livejournal.com 2011-12-03 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly no, I need them by certain date and don't want them stale.

Also, I make little money so I will save up.

Can I order them for the 20th of December?
